3 Pages American Culture Writing

In this paper, you should draw from the final module of this unit to reflect on the way that Americans today still “play Indian,” such as, the Boy Scouts; Mascots; and claims of Indian ancestry.  The student will provide a description of each of the three (2) instances examined in this module and make make a strong claim, supported by cited evidence, about the role of playing Indian in American identity. The paper should be 3 pages in length and provide specific examples drawn from the course materials.

Topic 1: From the Woodcraft Movement to the Boy Scouts

Whether you have been a part of the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, or gone to a summer camp, you have likely been “playing Indian” without even recognizing the connection. Symbolically, “Indians” have been long associated with nature, living as one with nature, having the necessary skills to live in the “wild.” In this series of readings you will learn how a profound shift took place during the modern era of industrialization. Disconnected from nature in the urban setting, in this climate, Americans began to grapple with the question of how to build American character in children. The educational system was becoming codified, but seemed to many to be missing key elements: an appreciation for nature, the outdoors, and building community.

In this topic you will read about Ernest Thompson Seton’s development of the woodcraft movement, the role that Native Americans such as Charles Eastman played in the formation of summer camps, and how today’s contemporary boy scouts (specifically the Koshare) continue to “play Indian.”

Topic 2: The Claim of Indian Ancestry

As we conclude this unit on Identity and Belonging, we can critically think and write about the ways that the great American experiment was a settler colony. The nostalgia emerging from the logic of elimination is still so strong that it continues to be practiced in the contemporary moment.

Our final topic helps us begin to make sense of the discrepancy seen in the initial survey. While Native Americans comprise roughly 1% of the American population, 2.5% of the population claim to identify as Native. That’s about 2.5 times the number of enrolled members of federally recognized tribes. What does this say about the nostalgia of Indianness for American identity?
